Plus sizing explained

A bigger wheel, a shorter sidewall, the same overall height.

Plus sizing fits a wheel one or two inches larger and a lower-profile tire so the overall height stays within about 3% of stock. 205/55R16 (24.9 in) to 225/45R17 is +0.4% and to 225/40R18 is +0.8%, so the speedometer barely changes.

Worked example: 205/55R16 → 225/45R17 → 225/40R18

Plus sizing example
SizeWheelWidthSidewallHeightChange vs 205/55R16
205/55R16 (stock)16205 mm4.44 in24.88 in—
225/45R17 (+1)17225 mm3.99 in24.97 in+0.38%
225/40R18 (+2)18225 mm3.54 in25.09 in+0.84%

Each step adds an inch to the wheel and removes about an inch of height from the two sidewalls together. Width usually grows a little, which is why the wheel needs to be the right width for the new tire. The ±3% height guideline is quoted by Discount Tire’s tire size calculator and 1010tires; it is a rule of thumb.

What changes

  • Sidewall shrinks: sharper steering response, less cushion, more wheel exposed.
  • Wheel and tire cost more in most sizes.
  • Load index and speed rating must still meet your vehicle’s needs.

Calculated from the size alone. Real tires vary a little by brand and model, and the loaded radius is a bit smaller. Confirm the wheel width range, clearance, load index and speed rating for your vehicle. See how to read a tire size, the load index chart and the speed rating chart.

FAQ

What is plus sizing?

Using a larger wheel and a tire with a lower aspect ratio so the overall height stays close to stock. +1 is one inch larger, +2 is two inches.

How much can the overall diameter change?

A common rule of thumb is about 3% (Discount Tire’s tire size calculator and 1010tires). It is not a guarantee of fit.

Will plus sizing change my speedometer?

Very little if the height stays within 1%: 205/55R16 to 225/45R17 is +0.4%, so 60 mph reads 60.2 mph.

Do I need a wider wheel for a wider tire?

Each tire size has an approved rim width range. Check the range for the tire you are considering.
