On a size like 265/70R17 94T, the T is the speed rating. Discount Tire’s speed rating page describes it as the maximum speed the tire can sustain under lab-tested conditions, and lists S 112, T 118, H 130, V 149, W 168 and Y 186 mph; the km/h figures are the standard values for those letters (as tabulated in the Tire code article). Older tires may carry a Z. We only publish the ratings we verified; more letters exist below S.
What it means for you
- Match or exceed the rating your vehicle maker specifies when replacing tires.
- Speed rating is tied to the tire’s test load and inflation, so it is not a recommended driving speed.
- A higher rating is not automatically better for every driver: check the tire maker’s notes on ride and wear.
Calculated from the size alone. Real tires vary a little by brand and model, and the loaded radius is a bit smaller. Confirm the wheel width range, clearance, load index and speed rating for your vehicle. See how to read a tire size, the load index chart and the speed rating chart.
