Regear chart for bigger tires

What axle ratio restores stock feel with 33, 35 or 37 inch tires.

The ratio that restores stock is current ratio × new tire height ÷ stock tire height. With a 3.73 axle, 31.6 in stock tires and 35 in tires: 4.13, and the nearest common ratio is 4.10.

Each cell is the axle ratio that restores stock feel: current ratio × new height ÷ stock height. Columns are the height of the tire you have now; rows are your current axle ratio.

Example

A 3.73 axle with 31.6 in stock tires and new 35 in tires needs 4.13 to restore stock; the nearest common ratio is 4.10. Use the gear ratio calculator with your tires, your axle and your cruise speed, which also shows engine RPM. Ratios come from a list of common ones: check what is made for your axle.

Calculated from the size alone. Real tires vary a little by brand and model, and the loaded radius is a bit smaller. Confirm the wheel width range, clearance, load index and speed rating for your vehicle. See how to read a tire size, the load index chart and the speed rating chart.

FAQ

What gear ratio do I need for 35 inch tires?

It depends on your stock tire and axle. From 31.6 in tires and 3.73 gears, 4.13 restores stock (nearest common: 4.10).

How do I calculate the regear ratio?

New ratio = current ratio × new tire height ÷ old tire height.

Is regearing required for bigger tires?

No. It is a choice that depends on the size change and how you use the vehicle: taller tires lower the effective ratio.
