How to calculate overtime pay

Regular pay plus overtime hours at a higher rate.

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 for the overtime rate, then by the overtime hours. At $20 an hour, 40 regular and 5 overtime hours = $800.00 + $150.00 = $950.00 gross.

Overtime rate = hourly rate × 1.5 (double time: × 2) Overtime pay = overtime hours × overtime rate Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime pay + double-time pay

Example with double time

At $25 an hour with 40 regular hours, 8 overtime hours (1.5×, $37.50) and 2 double-time hours (2×, $50.00): $1,000.00 + $300.00 + $100.00 = $1,400.00.

Not sure how many hours are overtime? Federal overtime starts after 40 hours in a workweek (see the FLSA guide). Then use the overtime pay calculator. Gross pay is before taxes.

Not legal, tax or payroll advice. Rules depend on your state, job and whether you are exempt. Check with your employer or your state labor department.
