Hours between two times

Start, end, optional break. Hours out.

How it works: Duration = end minus start; if the end is earlier than the start it is the next day (add 24 hours). Net = duration minus break.

Start and end time

Minutes, or h:mm like 0:30.

Times: 9, 9a, 9:30pm, 17:30, 1730. An end time earlier than the start means the next day.

The short answer

From 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes (8.50 decimal). With a 30-minute unpaid break it is 8:00. For an overnight span, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8:00 hours.

The formula

Minutes = end (min after midnight) − start; if end < start, add 1,440 Net minutes = minutes − break Decimal hours = net minutes ÷ 60

If start and end are the same time, the answer is 0, not 24 hours. For a full 24-hour span, enter an end time one minute earlier or use the weekly time card.

FAQ

How do I calculate the time between two times?

Convert both to minutes after midnight, subtract, and if the result is negative add 24 hours (1,440 minutes). Then divide by 60 for decimal hours.

Does it work past midnight?

Yes. 10 PM to 6 AM is 8 hours because an earlier end time is treated as the next day.
