Square footage calculator

Add shapes. Get square feet, yards and meters.

How it works: Rectangle = length × width. L-shape = outer length × outer width − notch. Circle = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Triangle = ½ × base × height. Square yards = sq ft ÷ 9; m² = sq ft × 0.0929.

Shapes to measure

AreasAdd rectangles, L-shapes, circles and triangles. Switch one to Subtract to cut out a hole.

The short answer

A 20 × 15 ft rectangle is 300 square feet (33.33 square yards, 27.87 m²). Cut out an 8 × 6 ft notch and an L-shaped room is 252 square feet. Divide square feet by 9 for square yards.

How to measure an odd-shaped room

Split it into rectangles, measure each one, and add them. Or measure the outer rectangle and subtract the missing corner (the L-shape option). Switch an area to Subtract to cut out a hole, such as a closet or a kitchen island. Pick feet, inches, yards or meters for each area.

FAQ

How do I calculate square footage?

Multiply length by width, both in feet. A 20 × 15 ft room is 300 sq ft. For other shapes, split them into rectangles, triangles and circles and add the areas.

How do I calculate the square footage of an L-shaped room?

Multiply the outer length by the outer width, then subtract the missing corner. 20 × 15 minus 8 × 6 is 300 − 48 = 252 sq ft.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

Nine. 1 yd × 1 yd = 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 sq ft.

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply by 0.09290304. 300 sq ft is about 27.87 m².
