How much does a gallon of paint cover?

About 350 square feet. Less on rough surfaces.

A gallon of paint covers about 350 square feet in one coat; labels typically say 300 to 400 (PaintCare). A quart covers a quarter of that (about 88 sq ft) and a 5-gallon bucket five times as much (about 1,750 sq ft).

PaintCare’s Buy Right guide says most coverage rates are between 300 and 400 square feet per gallon, and suggests 350 for a rough estimate. Your can’s label is the best source.

Why your number may differ

  • Surface: porous or rough surfaces soak up paint.
  • Sheen: flat covers more than gloss.
  • Color change: dark to light takes extra coats.
  • Application: thick rolling covers less area.
